Vail Resorts has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Forest Service to build a Breckenridge summer mountain park, called Epic Discovery. It includes:
zip lines,
a challenge course,
guided tours through rope swings, bridges and ziplines,
off-roading tours,
climbing walls,
kids’ parks and more.
If Vail Resorts gains approval — as they did for the winter mountain expansion on Peak 6 — they will begin construction of Epic Discoveryin the summer of 2015. (They’ve already begun Peak 6 construction, which adds 543 acres of new skiable terrain, expanding Breckenridge Ski Resort by nearly a quarter by including 400 acres of lift-serviced runs.)
Epic Discovery encourages learning through playing in the mountains. Vail Resorts will partner with The Nature Conservancy to create environmental education for visitors. In addition, Vail Resorts will contribute 1 percent of Epic Discovery revenue to The Nature Conservancyto maintain forest health.
The family friendly mountain adventure specifically includes:
- 14 additional miles of beginner and intermediate mountain biking trails,
- hiking pathswith interpretive discovery zones that teach people about animal habitats,
- a lookout tower on Horseshoe Bowl for panoramic views,
- and two-hour road tours showcasing Breckenridge’s awe-inspiring views.
It also features four ziplines, set up side by side, which willwhiz people 50 feet above the ground, through the trees and onto aerial bridges. As a bonus, zipliners will learn about local flora and fauna.
A world-class climbing wall and bouldering area will challenge both beginners and experts with its single- and multi-pitch routes. A challenge course will include zip lines, rope swings and bridges. The adventure park will be a playground for young kids to learn about the wonders of the forest, while playing on bungee trampolines, the alpine slide, a human maze, and a mountain bike park.
Breckenridge’s Epic Discovery will likely draw more visitors to lodge in Breckenridge, so buying a Breckenridge rental home or condo could mean more summer bookings — and income. It will also generate new construction and staff jobs, which would support an even more year-round economy — and need for housing — in Breckenridge.
