The Keystone Golf River Course, located in River Course Drive, Dillon, Colorado, was opened for public play in 2000. It took 10 years for this golf course to see its fruition, seven years to plan and three years to build it. Designed by well-known golf course designers Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, this golf course is known as an environmentally sensitive course. As Dr. Hurdzan claimed: “Our philosophy is to design golf courses that stir the spirit, exceed expectation and defy understanding. In doing this, golf becomes a complex puzzle requiring strength, skill and strategy - set in an environment of unquestioning beauty, yet subject to the irrepressible forces of nature."
This par-71 Keystone Golf River Course, with almost 7,000 total yardage, is situated around the magnificent Keystone mountains, Lake Dillon, Gore Range and Continental Drive, and of the alluring snow-capped peaks, with impressive elevation changes, variable bunkers, and water hazards which offer great and exciting challenges to golfers. This 18-hole golf course features sagebrush, native grasses and 12 types of exquisite wildflowers. It also offers a wildlife-kind of experience since elk herds, wildlife corridors and wetlands are all part of this nature-friendly golf course.
Rated by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the top golf resorts of the United States, the River Course features a 200-foot elevation drop, along with five to six tee boxes per hole. The first nine holes of the Keystone Golf River Course is oriented along the Snake River, while the back nine ascends through a higher ground among lodge pole pine forest. Most scenic holes are holes 1, 7, 15 and 18, with hole 18 featuring 12 bunkers. Most difficult holes are holes 5 and 16. Hole 16 has the highest elevation drop. The longest hole is hole 5, which has a total yardage of 563. It has a total of 74 bunkers, with five water hazards and 85 acres of sod. The type of grass used in tees, fairways and roughs are blue grass. This golf course has 70.3 over-all rating and 131-slope rating.
