Summit County is an excellent place to buy real estate, whether you’re a family of six or a single man or woman. It’s a winter wonderland and summer safari with year round beauty and activity. You won’t feel rushed, though, and will find plenty of time to relax and enjoy the good life. So, what do you need to know before buying your Summit County real estate?
Will you live here full time or just during peak ski season? While the summers are temperate in Summit County and don’t warrant any air conditioning, you might be hard pressed to find employment in the area. There are two main types of year-round Summit County real estate owners: those that work from home and those that work for the tourists as ski/snowboard instructors and bike or rafting tour guides.
How many bedrooms do you need? If this is a winter home, will your caretaker stay in the house during the remaining months? Do you have children or plan to use your Summit home as a gathering place for fifty of your closest friends? Do you want to be near the action of downtown or on the outskirts? Do you prefer a condo or a free standing house?
Money, of course, is always a consideration. How much additional debt can you take on in the form of a mortgage? How long do you want to continue making payments until you own the deed?
Summit County real estate investors must make the same decisions but from a slightly different angle. What kind of vacationers are you hoping to attract? What amenities do they want at their vacation spot and nearby?
Landscaping is another big question. While some areas, like condominium and covenant controlled communities require a specific minimum amount of landscaping, other homes require none. Will you appreciate a more natural, elk-mowed and fertilized lawn or do you desire a more lush, manicured yard?
Once you’ve settled all of these questions and begin looking at houses, you should decide what other features you want in a house. Do you want to spend time fixing it up or move right in to your “dream home”? Can you afford to spend the time and money that might be necessary to redecorate?
After moving in, make sure you keep your entryways clear of clutter, snow and ice. Your guests should feel welcome and expected, even if they are not. Consider adding a coat of paint or stain or at the very least scrubbing the front entryway soon after you move in.
