Dam Road reopens, with limitations
After so many Summit County locals and officials expressed discontent over the Dam Road closing, the Denver Water Board gave in — mostly.
The board reopened the road Friday, but the Dam Road will only remain open in the daytime, and large vehicles like trucks will not be able to drive on the ½ mile portion that goes over the dam. The road will close to all passengers from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Needless to say, there was much rejoicing when the dam opened, including plenty of honking cars. Not only did locals feel like they got their road back, but they also felt like they had triumphed over the “bully†Denver Water Board, which had closed the road without notifying local officials.
An official from the Denver Water Board said they learned a lesson on how to better communicate with Summit County officials when a need arises, and they won’t close the Dam Road without talking it over first. Summit County officials have dropped their lawsuit, and both entities will create a task force to study security of the dam.
The road will continue to be monitored by security, and in the future, a gate will prevent vehicles larger than 13,000 pounds to drive the road.
